“Land of artists and gateway to the Jequitinhonha Valley"
Land of artists, Padre Paraíso is located along the BR 116 highway, in Vale do Jequitinhonha, and is the starting point for the Pedras Preciosas Cycling Route.
The city has in its roots the cultural heritage of small farmers, prospectors and adventurers, who were once attracted to the region due to the discovery of precious stones.
Its founder, Father Agostinho Francisco de Mendonça Paraíso, was the first to visit the place as a preacher, back in 1875, committed to the catechesis of the Indians existing there. It is added, however, that the Indians were largely mestizos, a circumstance that would have facilitated their work of colonizing the municipality.
Today, Padre Paraíso is a cultural cradle of the Jequitinhonha Valley, housing several workshops of visual artists and artisans, some of them open to the visitation of the cycle tourist.
